It was this grandmother, affectionately known as Mere, who inspired her three sons and numerous grandchildren to be creative, Mary Anderson said.

"She said if you wanted to be an artist, you had to draw every day," Mary Anderson said.

"She would have classes on her side porch. You would go and have classes with Mere."

Mary Anderson said that many years ago she found a notebook that Mere had given her son, Walter Anderson.

"She had written on it ' words a day' and my father had marked through the 'words' and wrote 'birds,'" Mary Anderson said.

She and Billy Anderson lived with their parents in their early years at Oldfields, an older home on the bluff in Gautier overlooking the Mississippi Sound and acquired by her mother's family in While Agnes Grinstead "Sissy" Anderson cared for her ailing father, the two children spent time with Walter Anderson.

"When I was a child, he worked and we had access to him.

We could sit down while he was drawing," Mary Anderson said. "It was fascinating and pure magic."

By the time Leif and John were growing up, their mother had relocated the family to the Anderson compound on Shearwater Drive in Ocean Springs. There, the four siblings had run of the property by the Ocean Springs harbor along with their first cousins, who were the children of Peter and Pat Anderson and James "Mac" McConnell and Sara Anderson.

Peter Anderson was the founder of Shearwater Pottery and his wife, Patricia "Pat" Grinstead Anderson, was the sister of Sissy Anderson.

"We had an incredible childhood," John Anderson said.

No computers. TV was black and white and not much fun to watch. We were outside, running, playing and swimming in the bay," Leif Anderson said.

While their uncles Peter and Mac Anderson were a stable presence, their father was not a man they knew well.

"There was a feeling of liking him, but not being sure about him when he was there," Leif Anderson said.

"He was unpredictable in his behavior. He was very focused in his own way, I think, to merge with nature."

From the mids until the mids, Walter Anderson spent quite a bit of time on Horn Island about 12 miles south of Ocean Springs, and in his small cottage on the Anderson compound. His family lived in a house nearby called The Barn.

As a teenager, Mary Anderson said her father could be seen riding his bicycle around town, wearing no socks and tipping his hat at the women.

John Anderson said he wished his father had had a regular job as his friends' fathers did and so his mother would not have had to work so hard.

All three siblings praised the unending strength and support from their mother, Sissy Anderson.

"Our mother was a great woman and a great teacher. She had wisdom," John Anderson said.

As a tribute to her mother, Leif Anderson sang "The Mother-Earth" poem.

She also danced while Mary Anderson recited "As Kingfishers Catch Fire" by Gerard Manley Hopkins. Leif and John Anderson shared a dance in the style created by Leif that she calls Airth.

John Anderson said he can now look at his father's prolific artworks and writings and see a happy person.

"You could say categorically this man worked almost every minute of every day of his life in the profession he was trained to pursue," John Anderson said.

"He was living in a joyful existence, being extremely productive."
